Re: Proposed Rulemaking, 76 F.R. 41154, July 13, 2011
Dear Mr. Cairo : Lehigh Valley
Clean Water Action is writing today to request an extension of the comment period for the SRBC's proposed rulemaking, which redefines the scope of Approvals by Rule and streamlining the process around recycling wastewater. We would like to support the calls
of other environmental organizations in requesting thirty additional days to review the implications of these rules.
The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has published a recently updated advisory on fish consumption in the San Francisco Bay.Their report contains recommendations on which fish are suitable for human consumption and in what quantities. Toxins that end up in the bay also end up in fish through the food they eat. It is important to limit human consumption of fish due to these toxic substances.

Turning Up the Heat exposes the dismal results of the manufacturers’
voluntary mercury thermostat collection program. The Thermostat
Recycling Corporation (TRC) has collected less than 5% of the
approximately 100 tons of mercury from mercury thermostats
removed from service in the last decade. The collection program in
Rhode Island is below the national average for preventing mercury
pollution from thermostats and far behind the national leaders. The
report recommends that states adopt strong laws, with financial
incentives and performance standards for recycling mercury thermostats,
to drastically improve the TRC program and prevent mercury pollution.
