Roger Smith, New England Energy Coordinator
Roger Smith joined Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund in August 2003 and currently coordinates the Connecticut Climate Coalition. In the spring of 2004, Roger Smith helped coordinate the grassroots citizen lobbying effort which passed one of the first state global warming goals laws in the country. Since then he has worked in communities and at the state capitol to support energy efficiency programs for electricity and home heating as well as renewable energy. Smith works on federal climate policy with Clean Water Action's Washington DC office. Smith also oversees staff working to coordinate the 20% by 2010 town-level clean energy campaign and serves on the town council-appointed West Hartford Clean Energy Task Force.
Roger graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in History and began his environmental career with the Green Corps environmental organizing training program.
Jessica Bergman, Clean Energy Lead Organizer
Jessica joined the Clean Water Action/ Fund team in October 2010 and currently acts as the Lead Organizer on Connecticut's Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge. Prior to working for Clean Water Jessica served as an Outreach Coordinator for SmartPower, leading a municipality based energy efficiency program in western Massachusetts.
Jessica has a long history of involvement in the nonprofit sector. Ms. Bergman has worked with the Special Olympics of Massachusetts for the past seven years as a member of the management team, planning their annual fundraiser. In this role she also created and directed a new collegiate fundraiser. Jessica has also served as an intern for the Sierra Club and at the Massachusetts State House.
Jessica graduated from Boston University with a degree in Communication Studies and a concentration in International Environmental Policy.
Madeline Priest, Clean Energy Organizer
Madeline Priest began working with Clean Water Fund and Clean Water Action in September 2010 as a Clean Energy Organizer with the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge. She is organizing outreach efforts in four of the 14 communities, Glastonbury, Mansfield, Windham, and Lebanon.
Madeline graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington with a degree in International Political Economy with an emphasis in Global Development Studies and a minor in Environmental Policy and Decision Making. Upon graduating Madeline was a community organizer through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps with Hartford Areas Rally Together (HART) which is New England's oldest community organizing group.
Chamae Munroe, Clean Energy Assistant Organizer
Chamae Munroe recently joined Clean Water Fund in October 2010 as an Assistant Organizer for the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge. As a long-time Connecticut resident, she is excited for the opportunity to become more deeply acquainted with the 14 participating communities and to help the state become cleaner, more livable and to help fellow residents save money and earn community rewards. She is working with Roger Smith and members of the Clean Energy Corps in outreach efforts in the towns of Wethersfield, Portland, East Haddam, East Hampton and Glastonbury.
Chamae graduated from Trinity College with a B.S. in Environmental Science. Prior related experience has been mostly research- based; she has studied the capacity of shade-grown coffee plantations for carbon sequestration as well as erosion rates and magnetic enhancement of loess hill soil. She has a passion for performing arts, hiking and trying new foods.
Justin Haaheim, Community Clean Energy Project
Justin joined Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund in June 2011 to lead the Community Clean Energy Project, an initiative to organize and support Connecticut municipal Clean Energy Task Forces and involve them in state-level policy discussions. Prior to joining Clean Water, Justin worked as Executive Assistant to Dan Esty (now CT DEEP commissioner) in his role as chairman of Esty Environmental Partners, a corporate environmental consulting firm. Justin is the founder and lead organizer of the grassroots environmental coalition Act New Haven, and is Connecticut Regional Coordinator for 350.org.
Justin graduated from Yale University with a Master of Arts in Environmental Ethics. He is a passionate advocate for social justice, civic engagement and healthy communities. In 2006 and 2007 he worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina as a mentor and teacher to children in the Barrio San Pablo, one of the city's many impoverished neighborhoods, and cites that among the most formative experiences of his life. Justin is a professional jazz drummer and band leader in New Haven, CT, and plays actively in Connecticut and New York.
Anne B. Hulick, RN, MS, JD, Coordinator - Safe and Healthy Connecticut
Anne is the Coordinator for the Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Connecticut. In this capacity, she coordinates the campaign to pass health protective policies in Connecticut aimed at removing toxic chemicals from consumer and children's products and works to raise awareness across the state on the health impacts of exposure to toxic chemicals.
Anne was a staff nurse in critical care and cardiothoracic surgical intensive care. She served as Director of Acute Care Services at Waterbury Hospital Health Center, and as the Nursing Director of the medical cardiology service at Hartford Hospital.
Anne's passion to combine nursing, health policy and environmental law led her to pursue a law degree from Western New England College School of Law and she was admitted to the CT Bar in October 2007. Prior to joining Clean Water Action, Anne worked as an environmental analyst in the Air Bureau at Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and was the Environmental Health Coordinator at the CT Nurses' Association. She has written and lectured extensively on environmental health topics, particularly on the health impacts associated with exposure to chemicals.
In her spare time, Anne enjoys spending time on the Cape, kayaking, gardening and running.
Shannon McAvoy, Clean Energy Organizer - the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge.
Shannon is a firm believer in giving back to the community has been intricately involved in organizations such as Leukemia Society of America, Christmas in April and Compo Beach Playground Committee where, as Materials Coordinator, she researched and obtained the donation of materials for a new children’s playground in Westport, Connecticut. Shannon’s versatile background ranges from Fortune 100 companies to small start-up firms with management experience in the public and private sectors. Shannon recently graduated from NCC, Magna Cum Laude, with a Associates degree in Liberal Arts and is attending Trinity College to study Environmental Psychology and Environmental Science. Shannon is a mother of four and lives in Fairfield County.
