Warren, MI- Groups from across Michigan gathered at Macomb Community College today carrying signs reading “Support Michigan’s future – Support Clean Energy” and “Obama supporters want Climate Solutions” to show their broad support for the continued growth of a new energy economy.
“As Americans confront rising unemployment and the threat of global warming, we must take action to create and preserve jobs in the U.S., protecting the environment for future generations” said Sue Browne, United Steelworkers member and Regional Manager of Blue Green Alliance. “Clean energy jobs are needed now to guarantee MI families a future."
The rally participants represent a cross section of Michigan groups fighting for issues related to the continued development of Michigan’s multiple clean energy sources, retooling of Michigan’s manufacturing and construction sectors, public health and natural resource protections, economic and environmental justice, and climate change policy.
In attendance were members and volunteers from groups such as Clean Water Action, Repower America, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Michigan Environmental Council and others.
“Michigan has the most to lose if our leaders don’t move quickly and support strong climate solutions,” said Jesse Worker, organizer for 1Sky and Michigan Clean Water Action. “The good news is - we also have the most to gain by keeping our energy dollars here in the state invested in homegrown energy and our Michigan workforce. We are looking now to Senate Leadership to support strong federal climate policy. ”
Though diverse opinions were represented today, group members and volunteers stood in solidarity wearing green hard hats to symbolize a new clean energy economy, quality job growth and protection of Michigan’s vital 95% of U.S. fresh water resources.
“The threat of climate change is too great for the Great Lakes State,” said Kate Finneran, field organizer for Greenpeace. “The time to get smart about our future and show the world we’re serious about Global Warming is NOW.”
