Congress Can't Stop, Won't Stop Giving Polluters What They Want
Washington, D.C. - Today the House of Representatives passed a budget that makes it easier to give the super rich a huge windfall through "tax reform", makes huge cuts to safety net programs like Medicaid, will make it harder to protect clean water and, and will allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following response:
"This mean-spirited budget is completely at odds with American values. It will hurt millions of people and devastate our communities and climate. Congress is acting like a wholly-owned subsidiary of polluting industries, and this recklessness is more proof that Congressional leaders will do whatever these special interests ask them to do, no matter the consequences.
For industries and lobbyists, it's a huge return on their investment during the election, full of giveaways to oil, gas, and coal companies while giving huge tax breaks to the 1%. It opens the Arctic Refuge for drilling, a prize the oil industry has wanted for decades, puts priorities and profits of corporate donors first, and paves the way for cuts to programs that protect clean water, safeguard our health, and fight climate change.
This is a budget that only a billionaire or an oil company executive could love. It does nothing for ordinary Americans but definitely harms our communities by slashing vital programs and putting our water and environment at risk."
Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
