Preventing Oil Exploration in Big Cypress
On December 31, 2015, Clean Water Action, joined by six other conservation and environmental organizations submitted public comments to the National Park Service objecting to Burnett Oil’s proposed plan to conduct a seismic survey for oil and gas in Big Cypress National Preserve.
The Burnett Oil Company has proposed to conduct geophysical exploration activities over 110 square miles (70,454 acres) within the Big Cypress Preserve. We asked that a full Environmental Impact Statement be conducted for all phases of the exploration.
Big Cypress Preserve, which includes much of the western Everglades, is vital link to the drinking water supply of nearly 8 million people and the home of important species including the Florida Panther, wading birds, and rare plants in South Florida.
