Clean Water Action Endorses Gretchen Whitmer for Governor of Michigan

LANSING- Today, Clean Water Action announced its endorsement of Gretchen Whitmer for Governor of Michigan.

“After eight years of environmental devastation across Michigan, from the Kalamazoo oil spill to the Flint water crisis and mismanagement of the DEQ, Michigan needs a Governor who takes their job as public trustee of the waters and bottomlands of our Great Lakes seriously," said Mary Brady-Enerson, Clean Water Action Michigan Director. "We know that as Governor, Gretchen Whitmer will continue to fight for the Great Lakes and ensure that all Michigan residents have access to safe and affordable drinking water,” concluded Brady-Enerson.

Throughout her career in the State House and as State Senate Minority Leader, Whitmer has consistently championed environmental issues. She was instrumental in the passage of Michigan’s first renewable and energy efficiency standards, fought for a moratorium on fracking, and has pledged to begin the process of decommissioning Enbridge’s outdated and dangerous Line 5 pipeline as soon as she is elected.

In the general election, Whitmer will be facing Bill Schuette, the current Attorney General who has come under fire for his anti-environment agenda. As Attorney General, Bill Schuette used the Flint water crisis for political posturing – publicly supporting state delivery of water to Flint families, while claiming in court that the state shouldn’t have to deliver water to Flint families. He also sued EPA to prevent implementation of stream and wetlands protections, and failed to use his authority to decommission Line 5.

“Gretchen Whitmer understands the importance of protecting the Great Lakes. She has a proven track record of standing up to corporate polluters and advocating on behalf of our vast water resources. Her opponent on the other hand, has advocated for fracking in the U.P., and introduced legislation in the State Senate to allow oil and gas drilling under the Great Lakes” said Brady-Enerson. “We are proud to endorse her campaign and look forward to working with her as our next Governor. On November 6th, the choice is clear – Gretchen Whitmer for Governor.”
