Washington DC -- Today Clean Water Action, which has campaigned to protect clean water and make our democracy work for nearly 50 years, endorsed Joe Biden for President.

“Joe Biden will work to restore the environmental and public health protections that the Trump administration has gutted over the past 4 years, while fighting environmental injustice and taking aggressive action to address climate change,” said Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass. “Biden’s commitments to use the power of the federal government to protect people, restore our role as a global leader, and invest in clean energy solutions now are how we begin to recover from Trump’s destructive administration.”

Clean Water Action has spent more than three years defending critical Clean Water Act programs that keep pollution out of our drinking water from Trump administration rollbacks. Biden has committed to reversing these rollbacks and to working for clean water for all communities. He has pledged to strengthen enforcement of critical environmental laws and will be focused on ensuring all communities have clean and safe water while using data and science to drive policy decisions.

Joe Biden will make environmental justice a priority, pledging to coordinate federal government activities to fight environmental racism. Biden will revise and re-invigorate the 1994 Executive Order on Environmental Justice and establish an Environmental and Climate Justice division within the Department of Justice. He will also ensure robust action to address climate change. His plans include goals for a 100% clean energy economy by 2050 and a carbon free power sector by 2035. He will end subsidies for the fossil fuel industry and ban new oil and gas permits on public lands.

“President Trump has ignored environmental injustice and his policies have exacerbated environmental racism,” Wendelgass continued. “Biden has made serious commitments to fight climate change and protect clean water by centering the needs of frontline communities and Black and other communities of color. He knows that we need to address decades of injustice to ensure a safe, healthy future for all.”

Clean Water Action is focused on making our democracy work for everyone and Biden shares this goal -- he wants to make our democracy stronger and more fair. He understands we need to protect the right to vote, ensure access to voting is safe and equitable, and drastically reduce the influence of money on our elections. “We’ve let money warp our democracy for too long and President Trump is actively undermining people’s faith in our elections,” said Wendelgass. “We need a President who will fight for fair elections, ensure states have the funding they need to enact reforms at the ballot box, and work to get dark money out of our politics. Joe Biden will be that President.”

“Repairing the damage Trump has done won’t be easy or quick. It will require vision, moral clarity, a willingness to listen, and a leader who will act in the best interest of all of us. Joe Biden is that leader.”
