Single-use disposable products are so commonplace that they almost seem
necessary these days. In reality, single-use disposables (SUDs) are a
relatively recent phenomenon. In the mid-50s the plastic and chemical
industries sold the American public on the convenience of the
“throwaway” lifestyle. This modern American fascination with SUDs has
spread world-wide. Now, throw away packaging from every industrial
nation litters beaches and oceans world-wide, piles up in landfills and
contributes vast amounts of methane, and fills incinerators with
dioxin-producing plastics. The throwaway society has created an epidemic
of resource consumption, waste, and pollution.
Clean Water Action is taking on a fight against SUDs. We are targeting the replacement of all kinds of SUDs with durable, re-usable alternatives. From shopping bags, to food and beverage packaging, to plastic water bottles, our goal is to replace SUDs with re-usable and durable products. We are working to engage businesses, local governments, and individual consumers in our campaign ReThink Disposable. Embracing the use of durable and re-usable products will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, other pollution, and consumption of our planet’s precious natural resources. Join us in finding ways to ReThink Disposable!
